Know Your Job Before Joining
I've always been fascinated at the ways people can find information about a company before they go into it. It used to be word-of-mouth. Now it's the internet. Doing a simple Google search can result in a vast amount of information tidbits. And, the bigger the company, the better chance you have to learn before you leap. I'm finding that with social networking and the whole 2.0 Internet craze, we can really get even deeper. For example, today I found out about JobVent.com. It's an entire site devoted to company reviews from the worker's perspective. And, like most most review areas, you get a "love 'em" or "hate them" kind of answer. True, it's gossip at it's worst. But, if you look past the gossip, you can really find out about a company. Let's talk about a post I found about Yahoo.com. They state that:

"Benefits were outstanding -until GOOGLE forced Yahoo to take a hard look at the market share."

then later...

"I had thousands of shares of vested stocks so money was not the issue. The environment and moral changed too much. We lost 9 people in my department of 21 in just one month! - some quit and others were let go. I just became a place that I just didn't want to be."

So, you can see that a company can start out good. But, as it matured, it forgot why it was there. So, if I were to look for a job, I would stay away from Yahoo - for now. I have a good feeling that once the restructuring is complete, it can be a great place once again.

So, before you leap, do a search. It's amazing how a 5 minute search can lead you to 5 years of workplace happiness.
